During the quarter
To keep track of miles for IFTA, record each trip leg by jurisdiction and distance while the trip is still fresh. Save each fuel receipt too, since the fuel volume on the receipt is part of the record you will need later. You can also use the mileage log and the miles and gallons tool to keep the details in one place.
At filing time
When the quarter ends, the app will export the mileage and fuel packet you have been building. Your base jurisdiction provides the return and processes the quarterly filing, and timely filing and payment there covers the member jurisdictions. If you want a walkthrough, see how to file IFTA.
If you had no trips
A quarterly return can still be required even if no operations were conducted or no taxable fuel was used during the period. If that applies, you can still follow the same filing path through your base jurisdiction after checking the current rate information for the quarter.
- The quarterly reporting periods run January 1 to March 31, April 1 to June 30, July 1 to September 30, or October 1 to December 31.
- The return and full payment are due on the last day of the month after the reporting period closes, or the next business day if that day is a weekend or legal holiday.
- Rates can change, so check the current rate through the official IFTA site before you file.
